Part D Prescription Coverage

Formularies, tiers, the yearly out-of-pocket cap and the late-enrollment penalty — how Part D drug plans work and how to compare them on your own medications.

Part D is Medicare's prescription drug benefit, delivered only through private plans — either a standalone drug plan beside Original Medicare or built into a Medicare Advantage plan. Each plan keeps its own list of covered drugs, its own tiers and its own pharmacies, and each list changes every January.

Two people on the same plan can pay very different amounts because they take different drugs. The only comparison that matters is the one run on your own prescriptions. The guides below show you how, and what the penalty is for going without coverage.
